The returns you see as you approach perfection decrease and therefore do not deserve your time after a certain point. (Maybe this is why everyone should take calculus?) The principal mark of good work is not perfection but originality, the opening of new frontiers. A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault.

There's a great book called Never Good Enough (http://amzn.com/068486293X) that is exactly about this, and about how to retrain yourself to think about yourself in a way that isn't so exhausting!

DJ: Good read as always. Remembering what Seth Godin talked about last week at the awesome talk we got to attend, his big thing was about "Shipping" as he called it. At the end of the day, you have to ship. As the adage (modified) goes: Ship or get off the pot.

I gave up perfection long ago. It's the imperfections you learn to love.

Crap. Does the FTC now require "blog etiquette disclosures" too? Ha ha. I'm with you 100% on clicking through on links in comments/profiles. What's this Google Reader thing you refer to? I haven't been there in months. Is it like Wave or Buzz or ... the iPad?

Good times dude. Good times.

dj

In the interest of "blog etiquette" disclosure, I'll admit that I often click through the URLs in the login info left by the people who comment on my blog, and if I can find anything relevant to comment on anything they've recently written, I do so. It seems fair. It's also a great chance to peek in on blogs that I don't read via subscription -- or blogs I'm subscribed to but never seem to read because I'm too busy to open Google Reader...

Justin! It worked. I added some link-bait in the comments on your post to drive you here. Yeah! Yeah! I win! I'm perfect! Just kidding, although I really do appreciate you stopping by and weighing in.

Pretty sure you nailed it here: "In which endeavors MUST I do my best, which ones SHOULD I do my best, and which ones can I simply do "enough"?"

Also really agree about the regret piece. I'm going to be 34 in 6 days. I can honestly say I have one regret in my whole life - not spending a semester abroad my junior year of college. Then again, I did backpack Europe for 7 weeks after college, so...

Again - really appreciate your insight.

dj

Ha ha. Thanks SAM. Bravo <--one of your 'go to' words. Love it. You make an excellent point about perfection. It's all in how one defines it. My definition seems to change based on the situation. And...the bar tends to get raised often!

Thanks for stopping by...

dj
