World Cup 2010: American Beer Only

The short list of things that I love includes: Beer. Coffee. People. Kristina. Eva (<–her blog!). This post is about two of my passions – people and beer.

My buddy, Joe Saig

My buddy Joe Saig (pictured above donning one of his many costumes) left me a voicemail informing me that he would only be drinking American beer during the World Cup in support of Team USA. He encouraged/challenged me to do the same. If you know me, you know that I rarely turn down a challenge. So, of course I called him back and told him to consider it done. I then bounced over to Twitter and posted the following tweet:

Fine. @jsaig has convinced me. I’m only drinking American beer during #WorldCup … Who else will join me? @schneidermike?

I’m happy to report that several others – including Mike Schneider (“I’m in.”) – have publicly stated that they are joining me in the “American Beers Only” pledge for the entirety of the World Cup.

Will you join? If you are a Twitter person, please tweet “I’m in” with the hashtag #WCAmericanBeer. If you have no idea what I’m talking about and would rather just comment below or email/text/IM me with “I’m in” … well that works too.

Joe “JD” Saig

I feel like before you commit to this challenge laid out by Joe, it’s important to understand a bit more about who he is. I first met Joe (or JD as his family calls him) in 2005 as our wives were entering their internship year as Ob-Gyn residents at UNC Chapel Hill. Joe and I quickly became good buddies. We shared 2 things in common right off the bat:

  1. Passion for college football. He’s a die-hard Tennessee Volunteer fan (1999 alum) while I’m a University of Michigan guy (1998). Since our teams rarely play each other and are in different conferences, we each (kinda) pull for each others school as well. Kinda. The only topic that is off limits is Peyton Manning vs. Charles Woodson. Think back to who won the Heisman Trophy in 1997 and you’ll understand why.
  2. A love for a good beer. Joe and I both enjoy a cold beer or two every so often. While our wives were in their residency, we spent quite a bit of time tossing back beers. Heck, we had a good excuse – they were working and we were bonding. Not a story for this post, but Joe did once brag about a fridge full of St. Pauli Girl. My wife had to remind him that St. Pauli was NA beer. Joe’s never lived that one down. Every time Kristina and I see St. Pauli Girl in the store, we take some cheesy picture with it and send it off to Joe. Fun times.

Joe and I also have participated in many a theme party in our day (see picture above of Joe). Also, we made “Insignificant Other” t-shirts while our wives were in their Ob-Gyn residencies.

I was going to write a section about beer as well, but I’ll make it simple. I love beer.

So, back to the real point of this post. Repeating what I stated above, will you join us in the “American Beer Only” pledge during the 2010 World Cup? If you are a Twitter person, please tweet “I’m in” with the hashtag #WCAmericanBeer. If you have no idea what I’m talking about and would rather just comment below or email/text/IM me with “I’m in” … well that works too.
