*8/28/11 Update – Waldow Social: My Successful Social Media Experiment
—
I’m a big believer that things happen for a reason.
In this case, the “thing” was my dismissal from Blue Sky Factory on July 1, 2011 as part of a merger (details announced today). I’m told that it is typical for an acquiring company to put its own people into the key positions, so through no fault of my own, I was out of the coveted job of Director of Community.
While I’ll miss working with the Blue Sky Factory crew, the nice part is that they are still just an IM/text/Skype/G+/tweet/email/phone call/plane ride away. Over the past 10 days, I’ve had plenty of time to reflect. However, looking back only gets you so far. I’m ready to move forward. I’m ready for the next part of my journey.
I’ve been living, breathing (& sometimes sleeping) email marketing for over 6 years. I love email, however I also love social media … and community management … and social media marketing … and digital marketing … and people. I’m at one of those crossroads in my life – a critical time in my career. After living on this earth for over 35 years, I know what I’m good at (and what I’m not). I know what I like (and what I don’t). I know – and understand – the power of connections. I’m ready for the next chapter.
So…What’s Next?
As mentioned above, I love many aspects of business. And if I can be so bold (confident?), I’m darn good at a lot of stuff – email marketing, social media, community management. The next chapter of my life will include all 3 of those disciplines and more. I’m looking for a director/VP level role in digital marketing. The specific title doesn’t mean a whole lot to me, but the job will have responsibilities that include all things related to digital, interactive, and marketing.
My hope – as the title of this post implies – that my next job will come as the result of leveraging my social networks and specifically the relationships and trust I’ve build over the past decade.
My “social media experiment” (code name: Project Awesome) began last week when I asked a few of my friends to film 30 second “Hire DJ” clips. Here’s what they came up with:

Huge thanks to Jeremy Hanks, Chris Penn, Jason Falls, Chris Brogan, Peter Shankman, Jay Baer (with an assist from Mike Corak), Ann Handley, and “Agent” Jason Keath. You all rock.
“I Want To Help!”
If it wasn’t obvious by now, I’m looking for a new gig! While retirement unemployment has been fun, I’m starting to get a bit bored. I’m ready to continue my quest to take over the world. I’m itching to take an organization to the next level with their digital/interactive marketing. I’m pumped about stepping into a new role where I’ll have an immediate, positive impact.
If you’d like to help, I’m assuming you fall into one of a few possible categories:
- “I don’t have a job opening, but would like to chat.”
- “I have a job opening. Please contact me.”
- “I’d like to connect you with someone.”
- “Other”
Whichever of the above fits you best, you’ll likely want to see a resume. I’ve decided that (for the most part) traditional resumes are the thing of the past, especially for a guy who is looking to land a role in digital marketing. Therefore, I’ve chosen to create an interactive resume (embedded below).

Taking it up a notch, I’ve also created a “voiceover” version of my interactive resume. See the video below.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I’d be honored if you’d share this post, the video, my interactive resume, and/or my interactive resume with voiceover. Let the next chapter begin … now!
